UN Chief Calls for Urgent Global Institutional Reform

22 October 2024

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has underscored the urgent need for reforms to existing global institutions, arguing that they are ill-equipped to address the challenges of the 21st century. In a speech delivered during his visit to Ethiopia, Guterres emphasized the importance of these reforms in ensuring a more equitable and just world.

“The global institutions we have today were designed for a different era,” Guterres stated. “They are struggling to keep pace with the rapid changes in our world, from climate change to technological advancements and geopolitical shifts.”

The Secretary-General specifically highlighted the need for reforms within the United Nations Security Council, arguing that its current composition does not reflect the realities of the 21st century. He called for greater representation of developing countries, particularly from Africa, in the Council’s decision-making processes.

Guterres also emphasized the importance of reforming international financial institutions to ensure that they better serve the needs of developing countries. He urged these institutions to adopt more equitable policies that promote sustainable development and reduce global inequalities.

In conclusion, Guterres stressed the urgency of global institutional reform, stating that it is essential for addressing the pressing challenges of our time and building a more just and sustainable future for all
