The President of Tigray, Getachew Reda, has strongly criticized the region’s security forces for allegedly engaging in activities that exceed their mandate and lack legal justification. He stated that using state power to suppress dissent, interfere in administrative offices, or hinder the freedom of the press cannot be justified under any circumstances.
Speaking on the matter, President Getachew emphasized that security forces should act with responsibility and focus on safeguarding peace and order. He added that any unlawful conduct within these forces undermines the rule of law and erodes public trust.
The president called for adherence to lawful practices and warned against actions that appear to prioritize individual interests over institutional mandates. He also criticized what he described as a failure of accountability within the security apparatus, urging immediate reforms to ensure the integrity and neutrality of these institutions.
In addition, Getachew noted that the lack of clear governmental oversight and coordination has created a vacuum, allowing disorganized militia groups to proliferate. He urged the government to restore effective governance and stressed the importance of addressing the needs of the people through legitimate and transparent means.
Addressing concerns in specific areas, such as the southern and southeastern zones, he highlighted the role of youth in destabilizing these regions and called for urgent interventions to restore law and order.
The president’s remarks come amid rising tensions and public dissatisfaction in Tigray, with calls for greater accountability and a return to lawful governance becoming increasingly prominent.
