Microsoft Stands Firm on TPM 2.0 as a “Non-Negotiable” Requirement for Windows 11

With Windows 10 security updates set to end on October 14, 2025, Microsoft is urging users to transition to Windows 11. However, the stringent system requirements, particularly the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 mandate, remain a barrier for many PCs.

This week, Microsoft reiterated its unwavering stance on TPM 2.0 as essential for Windows 11’s enhanced security. The TPM handles critical cryptographic functions, including disk decryption at boot, making it a cornerstone of the operating system’s security baseline.

In addition to TPM 2.0, Windows 11 requires Secure Boot and processors from the 8th-generation Intel Core, AMD Ryzen 2000, or Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 series or newer. While TPM 2.0 is present in many older CPUs, enabling it often requires manual BIOS adjustments or motherboard updates.

For unsupported systems, Windows 11 installation is possible but involves additional steps. These systems may face update limitations, but users report performance comparable to Windows 10.

As the Windows 10 end-of-support deadline looms, users have the option to extend support for a fee or upgrade to Windows 11 for free—provided their systems meet the necessary requirements. Microsoft’s firm stance signals its prioritization of long-term security and performance over broader compatibility.
