Implementation of  Tigray Peace Deal so slow, Says President Getachew Reda

3 November 2024
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – President Getachew Reda marked the second anniversary of the Pretoria Agreement  by acknowledging significant progress but also expressing deep concern over ongoing challenges in its implementation.

The agreement, signed in November 2022, brought a much-needed halt to the devastating conflict in Tigray. However, President Getachew emphasized that the full realization of peace and stability in the region remains elusive.

Key achievements of the agreement include the cessation of hostilities in Tigray and the restoration of essential services like banking, telecommunications, and transportation.

Despite these positive developments, President Reda highlighted several critical issues: constitutional rights, normalization process and occupation and humanitarian crisis.

The full recognition and respect for the constitutional rights of Tigray’s regional government have yet to be realized. Additionally, the normalization process in Tigray is still underway, with significant challenges remaining. Furthermore, West Tigray continues to be occupied by Amhara forces, while Eritrean troops maintain a presence in parts of northwestern and eastern Tigray, leading to ongoing humanitarian crises and displacement.

To ensure lasting peace, President Reda urged all parties involved to prioritize the full implementation of the Pretoria Agreement. He stressed the importance of addressing the outstanding issues and working towards a comprehensive solution that guarantees the rights and security of all Ethiopians.
