Addis Ababa, 29 November 2024 – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has reiterated its commitment to supporting South Sudan’s peace process following a briefing on the implementation status of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
The briefing was provided by IGAD’s Special Envoy to South Sudan, the Interim Chairperson of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), and the Chairperson of the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM). It was delivered to IGAD Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu.
Dr. Workneh praised the efforts of the Special Envoy and the IGAD institutions, reaffirming the regional body’s unwavering support for South Sudan’s pursuit of peace. He highlighted the importance of continued efforts in key areas, including the unification of forces, constitution-making, and preparations for free and fair elections scheduled for December 2026.
IGAD also called on the international community to maintain support for RJMEC and CTSAMVM to enable them to fulfill their mandates effectively during the extended implementation period of the R-ARCSS.
Under Dr. Workneh’s leadership, IGAD institutions pledged to hold regular reviews on the progress of the peace agreement’s implementation. The organization reaffirmed its dedication to working alongside national, regional, and international stakeholders to ensure sustainable peace and stability in South Sudan.
