Addis Ababa, November 30, 2024 (ENA) – Ethiopia and France have signed a landmark agreement to modernize and strengthen their educational collaboration, with a focus on the Lycée Guebre-Mariam High School in Addis Ababa.
The signing ceremony, held in the school’s amphitheater, was attended by Ethiopia’s Minister of Education, Professor Berhanu Nega, and France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot.
Professor Berhanu emphasized that the agreement, a product of over a year of negotiations, breathes new life into a partnership rooted in the school’s 77-year history.
“This agreement ensures our collaboration remains relevant to contemporary challenges while reflecting our shared values of inclusion and excellence,” he said.
A standout provision of the agreement is the commitment to reserve 10% of student admissions for children from low-income families, providing them with full scholarships.
“Education must be a tool for equity, not a privilege reserved for the affluent,” Professor Berhanu remarked. “This initiative embodies our mutual commitment to equitable access and societal transformation.”
French Minister Jean-Noël Barrot celebrated the school’s dual role as an Ethiopian and French institution, highlighting its reputation for academic rigor and inclusivity.
“The Lycée Guebre-Mariam is a beacon of educational excellence, preparing students for global opportunities while fostering deep ties between our nations,” Minister Barrot stated.
He also lauded the dedication of the school’s staff and alumni for their contribution to Ethiopia-France relations.
This agreement introduces an inclusive governance model and expands access to Ethiopian students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. It is expected to strengthen the school’s legacy and solidify Ethio-French ties for generations.
The initiative underscores both nations’ commitment to advancing education as a bridge for cultural and diplomatic cooperation.
