The “Adam Foundation,” founded by former Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen, has officially been launched. The foundation, in collaboration with experts in the field, aims to combat food insecurity in Africa by promoting equitable food distribution and sustainable agricultural practices.
Registered as a non-governmental organization under Ethiopian civil society authority with registration number 7260/24, the foundation is built on core values of inclusivity, collaboration, innovation, excellence, empowerment, and a strong focus on children.
Demeke Mekonnen, the founder and chairperson of the board, emphasized that addressing equitable food systems was a priority during his leadership and inspired the establishment of the foundation. He also highlighted that the foundation will focus on agriculture, education, social protection, food security, health, and improving nutrition systems through targeted projects.
The Adam Foundation is aligned with Africa’s Agenda 2063 and aims to contribute to Ethiopia’s and Africa’s development by expanding food accessibility and fostering resilience. Demeke underlined his commitment to advancing Africa’s prosperity by promoting sustainable food systems, building self-sufficiency, and creating skilled human resources.
In his remarks, Demeke also called on African leaders to prioritize food systems as a crucial component of development. He stressed the importance of fostering innovative approaches and leveraging internal capabilities to overcome food insecurity and ensure the physical and mental well-being of future generations.
Recognizing food systems as a global challenge rather than an individual concern, Demeke urged for the establishment of continuous international collaborations and organizations to tackle this pressing issue effectively.
