The Electric Transmission Line Extension from Kenya to Tanzania Begins Trial Power Supply

The Ministry of Water and Energy has announced the commencement of trial power transmission on the newly extended electric transmission line connecting Kenya and Tanzania, a key part of the Eastern Africa High Voltage Power Transmission Project.

The Eastern Africa Power Transmission Project initially established energy interconnection between Ethiopia and Kenya. The second phase of the project extends this connectivity to Tanzania, with the power line now operational for trial energy supply, according to official reports.

This regional energy cooperation aims to ensure reliable and affordable power distribution, fostering collaboration and shared prosperity among nations. The Ministry emphasized that the initiative will support the expansion of Ethiopia’s renewable energy exports, strengthening the green electricity trade across the region.

The project is expected to generate significant economic benefits, with annual revenues projected to exceed $200 million in its early phases. Backed by the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and France’s Development Finance Institution, the project represents a critical step in advancing regional integration and sustainable energy solutions.
