Dr.yishrun Belete, Minister of Innovation and Technology, stated that the Digital Ethiopia 2025 Strategy and economic reform initiatives have accelerated progress in key sectors. Over the past four years, significant achievements have been made in laying the foundation for Ethiopia’s digital transformation.
Notable reforms include opening the telecom sector to private investors and offering a 10% stake in Ethio Telecom for public subscription, which has helped make the sector more competitive and efficient.
The Digital Ethiopia 2025 Strategy has increased internet users from 17 million to over 42 million, reflecting its transformative impact. The strategy also emphasized improving electricity access, increasing the number of public and private data centers, and creating favorable conditions for local and international investment in ICT parks with high-capacity data facilities.
These developments have supported investment, job creation, skills exchange, and innovation, particularly in establishing online government services. Efforts to develop digital skills, including the “5 Million Ethiopian Coders” initiative, are advancing rapidly to create a digitally skilled workforce.
Cybersecurity remains a priority, with ongoing government initiatives to protect the nation’s digital infrastructure. The ministry highlighted the importance of public awareness and skill development in ensuring a secure digital environment.
