The African Union (AU) has reported significant progress in reintegrating former combatants in Tigray. The process is advancing effectively, with smooth implementation across key centers.
In collaboration with the National Rehabilitation Commission and Tigray’s interim administration, AU representatives recently visited centers in Edaga Hamus and Mekelle University’s Meles Zenawi Campus. Their goal was to assess the progress of training programs.
Positive Evaluations from AU Officials
Brigadier General Tshipo Mafouza, part of the AU’s Pretoria Agreement Monitoring and Verification Mission, praised the reintegration training for its efficiency. He noted that the programs equip former combatants with the skills needed to reunite with their families and communities.
Moreover, the preparation phase has been a success. It ensured the delivery of essential services such as food, registration, bank account setups, and the establishment of support centers. These efforts have created a strong foundation for the reintegration process.
Continued Support from the AU
The AU has also reaffirmed its commitment to Ethiopia’s reconciliation efforts. It is providing ongoing guidance, monitoring, and support. Ernest Naya Dolo, from the AU’s Political Affairs, Peace, and Security Department, emphasized the careful planning observed at the Edaga Hamus and Mekelle centers.
Expanding the Initiative’s Reach
Colonel Belay Abebe, Director of Program Planning and Monitoring at the National Rehabilitation Commission, confirmed that the programs are on track. He added that former combatants are actively participating in rotational training at transitional centers in Adigrat and other parts of the Mekelle region.
Collaborative Effort for Sustainable Reintegration
Launched on November 21, 2024, the initiative involves the federal government, Tigray’s interim administration, and international organizations. This marks the first phase of a long-term plan to reintegrate former combatants into society effectively.
